Astia soft skin portrait is a low-contrast, lightly diffused natural-light recipe built on the ASTIA film simulation, using −3 Clarity to soften micro-texture on skin and a +2 Red / −2 Blue white balance shift so faces read warm and healthy rather than clinical. DR200 tames window-light highlights without hardening the tonal transition across cheeks and foreheads.

Why this base

Astia is Fujifilm’s portrait-first simulation: its colour science holds skin in a gentle, believable register while keeping secondary colours quiet. That is the whole point here. Dropping Color to −1 leans further into that restraint so lipstick, warm knitwear and background greens never pull attention away from the subject, and the +2 Red shift keeps complexions warm instead of pink.

How to shoot it

Use it in soft window light, north-facing rooms or afternoon shade where contrast is already low. The −3 Clarity is the signature move, giving skin a lightly powdered, flattering finish without the plastic look of heavy smoothing, while Sharpness −2 keeps eyelashes and hair defined enough to anchor the face. DR200 protects a bright window behind the subject, and the −1 Highlight rolls off blown edges gently rather than clipping them. Meter for the skin and add +1/3 to +2/3 EV so faces sit bright and open; the −1 Shadow keeps just enough depth under the jaw and in the eye sockets so the image does not go flat. Grain set to Weak/Small and Color Chrome Effect Weak add a faint organic texture and a touch of tonal separation in warm tones without introducing crunch.

What to avoid

This is not a punchy, high-contrast look, so do not expect vivid skies or saturated street colour from it — that is Velvia territory, not this recipe. Avoid hard direct sun, where the lifted shadows and low Clarity can make faces look washed and shapeless; the softness only works when the light is already soft. If skin starts looking too smooth or waxy, ease Clarity from −3 toward −1 and lift Sharpness to −1. On the X-T3, which lacks Clarity, this recipe loses its defining ingredient, so it is best kept to Clarity-capable bodies. Keep Color Chrome FX Blue OFF here — pushing blues would cool the palette and undo the warm, skin-friendly balance the WB shift creates.
