This recipe runs the Bleach Bypass simulation with Color pulled to -2, DR400 to hold hard highlights, and STRONG large grain for a war-film / thriller grit. The signature move is Shadow +3 stacked on the sim’s native contrast, which crushes the darks while the highlights stay cold and hard.

Why this base

Eterna Bleach Bypass is the only Fuji simulation that mimics skipping the bleach step in film processing — silver stays in the emulsion, so colour is muted and contrast climbs. Dropping Color a further -2 and running Color Chrome Effect STRONG deepens what little saturation remains, so a red brake light or a sodium streetlamp reads as a dense accent rather than a splash. Color Chrome FX Blue WEAK keeps night skies and shadowed concrete from going flat cyan.

How to shoot it

Expose a touch under — the -2/3 to -1/3 EV bias keeps highlights from clipping to paper white and lets the metallic sheen sit where it belongs, on wet asphalt and window glass. DR400 protects those bright edges against dark backgrounds, which is why it earns its place over DR200 here. The WB Daylight base with -1 Red / +2 Blue leans the whole frame slightly cool, reinforcing the drained-steel mood, while Clarity +3 and Sharpness +1 bite into concrete texture and rain streaks. Noise Reduction -2 lets the STRONG large grain read as coarse film texture rather than smeared digital mush at high ISO.

What to avoid

Do not expect clean skin or pleasant portrait warmth — the -2 Color and cold WB shift are unforgiving on faces, so this is a scene-and-street recipe, not a people recipe. Avoid soft, low-contrast light; the look needs directional hard light, backlit rain or point sources to give the contrast something to work against. If the frame feels muddy in flat overcast, ease Shadow from +3 toward +1 and drop Clarity to +1 rather than adding saturation, which would break the silver-retention illusion. Keep grain STRONG and large — dialling it to WEAK removes most of the cinematic register this recipe is chasing.
