It is the engineer’s monochrome — smooth, sharp and slightly clinical.

Why this base

ACROS is the only sensible starting point for a T-Max emulation because its grain algorithm is finer and its tonal roll-off smoother than the plain MONOCHROME profile. That matches T-Max’s modern T-grain emulsion, which trades the loose, organic texture of Tri-X for tightness and resolution. Grain Weak / Small keeps just enough structure to avoid a digital-clean look without ever tipping into the coarse feel of a classic 400-speed film.

How to shoot it

This recipe is happiest in flat-to-moderate light: overcast streets, museum interiors, and documentary work where you want detail rather than drama. DR200 protects bright windows and skies while Highlight +1 and Shadow +1 add a controlled snap that never crushes the precise mid-tones. Sharpness +2 with Clarity +2 sharpens texture and micro-contrast for that technical, edge-defined rendering, and Noise Reduction −2 preserves the fine grain instead of smearing it. The −1 Red / +1 Blue shift is the signature move: it nudges the whole scale cool, so concrete, metal and skies read a touch steely rather than warm.

What to avoid

Do not expect the soulful warmth of a Tri-X recipe here — that is deliberately gone. If you push Shadow or Clarity higher the image can look harsh, since the cool shift already removes the softening warmth that hides hard transitions. In strong side light, dial EV to −1/3 to keep highlights on the paper-white side of the histogram; DR200 is holding the brights, but T-Max’s calling card is retained detail, not blown skies. For deeper skies without losing the neutral base, swap to ACROS+Ye rather than adding contrast.

ACROS renders finer, tighter grain and smoother mid-tone gradation than the plain MONOCHROME profile, which is exactly the tabular-grain, clinical character T-Max is known for. The base gives you the clean shadows before Grain Weak / Small adds only a whisper of texture.

Tri-X recipes lean warm, loose and grainy; this one goes the other way. The −1 Red / +1 Blue shift cools the tonality, Sharpness +2 and Clarity +2 raise edge definition, and Grain stays Weak/Small so the image reads engineered rather than organic.

Any X-Trans IV or V body with ACROS and a Clarity control, from the X-Pro3 and X-T4 through the X-T5, X100VI and X-M5. The X-T3 is excluded because it lacks the Clarity slider used here.
